Every community has a “heart,” made up of a downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods.  It is the “true” part of the community— the soul that shaped its past and guides its future. We on the St. Patrick’s Day Committee are proud of our “True Topeka” and the Topeka St. Patrick’s Day festivities celebrate our unique community and its Irish culture.  Following are some fine examples of “True Topeka.”

Fiesta Mexicana—in its 75th year is a treasured Topeka event. Fiesta, sponsored by Our Lady of Guadalupe Church will take place July 15-19, 2008.  A great celebration of Mexican culture and preservation of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and school, the event draws peoples of all cultures with music, food, dance, family and friends.  True community, true Topeka...

The Miracle on Kansas Avenue just celebrated its 11th anniversary in Historic Downtown Topeka.  Many Topekans start off the holiday season by coming to, or being involved in, the Miracle on Kansas Avenue parade. The Miracle on Kansas Avenue (also called MKA) tradition began in 1995 as a project by the Leadership Topeka class. They designed MKA not only as part of the holidays, but to celebrate the accomplishments made in redeveloping downtown. The thought behind it was that for many, downtown Topeka hearkens back to the holidays of their youth. Spending time in the shops, having a soda with their mother or father, and doing Christmas shopping.  We are thankful to MKA for reminding all of us of the importance of Downtown.  We believe...
